Dammit.

This is an interview I just did with Clayton Makepeace. Who the hell is Clayton Makepeace? He’s a Big Fancy marketing guy who’s email promotions bring in SIXTY MILLION DOLLARS a year or so.

…Just when I thought I was fancy, Clayton comes in and upstages me by 300%. Dammit.

You’ll enjoy this. There’s one little “twist” in here that I think is the Big Secret (TM) to what he’s doing.

Anyway - click here to listen:

    Talk about “copying shamelessly”…

Most marketing tactics are learned or borrowed. Very few ideas are unique. I love learning of new twists on old ideas and try to actually implement them and share with my own members.

Thanks for sharing with your list (i.e. Me)

You very kindly sent me an e-mail re your interview with Clayton Makepeace. However, it would be nice to be able to listen to your conversation with this gentleman. I was unable to listen to your conversation with Mr.Makepeace as the recording was impaired, hence useless. Maybe this is because I am in England and you have a different format that is applicable for us to hear your call. I have recently joined your network.

Great interview - I don’t agree with the conclusions however.

Strategy is king. I understand the product we are promoting is Clayton’s Copy Course which is all well and good, but he isn’t making 60 million plus because of his copy.

I’m sure it helps and I think the truth lies in something he said, Strategy and Copy together make exponential returns.

I am more interested in the strategies he is employing than the actual copywriting techniques he is using.

The real question is this: how much is he making per visitor to make 60 million per year and how many visitors is selling to….. how is he reaching them… through a 200 person mailing list? Not likely. Something more to the story there. He would have to be in hundreds of niches with those numbers and the law of dwindling numbers would hurt his ROI. Doesn’t make sense.

Let’s talk about his events, does he do them himself, does he have a team creating them, or does he promote other people’s events?

After he finishes that up - what type of products is he promoting that people won’t say - well isn’t that why I’m going to the event? Plus, going to an event as he calls it - there is a demand for events in some niches, but it’s definitely on the small side.. people won’t go to an event that will teach them how to clean their carpet better. Especially not out of state.

I think that’s the real reason people are in the Internet Marketing niches - people need their products over and over, willing to go to events, and the return outweighs the cost on even high priced digital products.

Just my thoughts - great interview Frank - keep them coming.

A fascinating call with Clayton Makepeace!

The example he used, however, was in a moving, self-refreshing market, namely financial markets. How would you create an event for a solo operator in dentistry, chiropractic, psychology, addiction counseling or naturopathy, for example, to promote his first book?

    Great stuff, Frank. And Clayton.
It is very exciting to be involved in internet marketing (unfortunately, not nearly of the level of Frank or Clayton) at this time. At some point soon, someone will figure out that traditional marketing techniques apply to the internet the way traditional boxing techniques apply to mixed martial arts - in other words, a small part of the next step.
And I think it has to do with using the power and speed of the internet in establishing a relationship with each member of your list, individually.
The glut of membership site stuff is tickling the edges of this.
The glut of listbuilding stuff is tickling the edges of this.
Frank, in his marketing persona (which may be his real persona), comes awfully close to making everyone feel like he’s their best and coolest friend.
I admit that I am not good enough to do this (well, not yet).
But I think that’s the idea.

    My Take aways:

    1) Choosing the right market is critical

    2) Clayton’s Filter: Target a virgin captive and engaged audience not overly saturated with marketing tactics. Tap into current daily events with strong copy that leverage emotions: excitment, fear and/or confusion. Offer freshness and timely high value content. Incorporate PLF into campaign.

    Target Markets:

In terms of using his filters for dental or cleaners etc - I think you have to extrapulate…Ex: he talked about the hi tech sector and said their emails lacked: Scarcity, Deadlines, Headlines, Benefits etc. Take away: using PLF and direct response marketing in virgin market will kill. Use great copy to really kill it. Not every market will allow you to apply every strategy, tacitc or ideal filter - use what makes sense for your market.

Good copy is missing in IM world. Free copywriting resources 400 articles and a front end report with a backend course I assume.

The List: I believe his list was 200K not 200 people.

    Results:

I assume that to get these numbers, his clients marketing budgets were very large so thats a big factor and it sounds like he had a quality list to work from in most cases. Strong content combined with PLF in a non salesy approach (nothing to buy) applied to his A+ filtering target audience produces big numbers.

That said, I would have liked to have heard more about new lead generation tactics used, any mix of offline marketing and client budgets for balance. Also more on other markets that re not as perfectly matched as the financial markets i.e. more product based like: health products and other one off campaigns.

Good stuff. Always good to get grounded and view the big picture again.

    Frank,

Someone could make a product out of the strategies he covers. It’s great to say what to do. The beauty would be for someone to actually make some Camtasia videos show how it’s done and package it in bite-sized pieces.

I believe copy writing courses are OK, but really feel that a person’s background has more to do with it than something you can learn. If the courses were really what they say, why would people still call on Carlton and, well, you, to write their copy? :-)

There’s much to learn in copy writing. Yet I believe the majority of it comes from the school of hard knocks.

Product launches are as old as products themselves, and invariably overrated. Name one product or service STILL SELLING that was launched from out of the blue more than say 6 months ago, using PLF.

it would be cool to be able to go to the health ezine as well, to see how the principles that underlie the campaigns, are applied in two different arenas..

Thanks Frank for this - I understand what Clayton is saying here. I’m in the financial field. Different dynamic to the norm. You need to integrate with stories that are current and ’solve’ those problems in your content that the major financial heavy weights are making mistakes with. Doing so makes you an authority to your readers way ahead of blue-chip Wall Street firms who are just making mistakes left-right and centre.

Again, our copy is also different.

Also, our copy is not just a sales letter, it works off huge strategic policies that work away from the sales copy itself, integrating the whole embrace of what we do. This taps back to all our correspondence so we push out a lot of goodwill by default. Of course when this happens people simply begin to pre-qualify themselves to us and will even offer you their ‘lives’ and money earnings to solve their problems for them as there is just too much trust built into copy.

Again, our sales copy is also highly tactical as it integrates very powerful & offsets across different areas for deal making, personnel training, accounting numbers, educating pieces etc.

    Why?

Our copy evolves from a huge economic footprint we set, that we use to proof strategy that provides us with a financial canvas we use to engage customers, clients, partners etc. Every, word, sentence and paragraph must have a purpose. Correct letters, words, sentences and context resonate very powerfully, so evolving the right ‘keyword’ combinations throughout a hardcopy print is vital!

Finally, a tip for those people who hate doing copy:

Most of our copy can go through any thing from 20-150 times of proof edits, and 7-10 times of written edits. The more you read the same work, the more you can ‘SEE’ the future, see what is wrong with your copy, see unusual discoveries of strategies and tactical mace that no one ELSE will SEE!

We make many strategic and tactical discoveries of all sorts simply though mentally pulverising our copy to dust over and over again.

Read your copy over and over until you can’t change it…get rid of all the tumours and it will integrate with the mind of your reader seamlessly like magic.

You’ll be very surprised what you’ll learn while intensely studying your own copy!

Yeah, thanks again for the audio Frank and to the contributions of Mr Makepeace.

    Hey Frank,

    Luv you man!

Just finished reading Electrify Your Ads, and as you know, they spent a lot of copy talking about colloquialisms and how that really worms into the readers mind.

In my niche, real estate investing, we have a guy that writes humor under the pen name Cletus who is a master at this. You should check him out, (www.bycletus.com) He’s the “Guru to the Gurus” in real estate investing.

Not only is his writing hilarious, he has the knack of twisting colloquialisms down to a science. I think you may really identify with this guy. I say that because I really enjoy the way you write and entertain at the same time. I think it’s a gift. You definitly have it.

As a side note, I’ve been hip to Clayton for a while now, and I’m flat out disappointed you let the cat of the bag about CM. Dammit, I know this will mean more quality competition. I hate it when that happens.

    Rock on,

    Bill

    P.S.
I put his website in the website box…

Amazing call! I just began reading about Clayton Makepeace before I heard this call so I couldn’t wait to hear it and I’m happy that I did. It has been really hard to make money online before I found the free automated system that I am using now. I still feel a little bad that I haven’t been able to crack the code and make money with my own product. I’ll never stop trying because Frank & Clayton are great, and I want to be successful like them instead of using a free system to make me money. Oh well, making a few thousand per month using the easy and free system that I found is better than nothing…

    Thanks again Frank & Clayton,

    Jay

I must say that - and I don’t have an affiliate relationship with ANY of these guys - Frank Kern, Jeff Walker, Mike Koenig and Eban Pagen (just to mention the few I have heard and subscribe to) are probably the most real marketers on the web I have seen. Because of all the crap that’s being sold - from 4 year old CRAP product (Brett I - last name starts with I) and MANY other so-called “Gurus”, opportunities ALWAYS abound.

Learn from these four guys I mention, and you will ALWAYS get amazing stuff from them that will help you if you apply it.

Out of necessity, we are now in the process of developing AMAZING software for e-commerse which we will GIVE away. And this as a result of what we have learnt from guys like Frank… Learn from the guys who have been there, done that and wear the T-shirt, and it looks like Frank HATES ties like I do…

Thanks for amazing content, Frank. I really look forward to meeting you and the other guys - hopefully in the VERY near future…

I’ve been registered with Clayton for about 3 years now, and I have to say the value of his ‘Articles’ that he gives away to all subscribers is phenominal.

The laid back manner of his writing keeps you glued to the page right ’till the end. I reckon THAT’s the secret to his success. His charisma, (like yours) is very infectious. You could both talk about ‘raw sewage’ and we’d all still read or listen to the end.

    Great Audio,

    Frank,

This was a great call and I appreciate your advice and videos. They are great.

I have a burning question and if you could email me an answer I would be most appreciative.

Just wondering when Clayton does those deals with the health companies to get 10% of sales. Does he need to buy part of the media too? I.e. What is the deal exactly?

We don’t fall in love when we are in the company of someone, we fall in love when we are off by ourselves thinking about them afterwards.

Its quite clear that we enjoy being in each others company and like having fun together. And its also plainly obvious that a butt naked angel called cupid doesn’t shoot an arrow into our butt.

But it is when you are on your own and you find yourself thinking about someone in such a unique way, that allows you to list all the qualities about them you really like, and imagine yourself with them connecting together with the flow of your personalities, is when a feeling of love begins to take place deep inside of you. And although you may try push these feelings down or talk yourself out of them, you only find it comes back 10 times more powerful than ever before, allowing you to fall into deeper emotional states of falling for this person during moments of the day. With me, according to my experiences with people, theres always potential connections that can be built between us as human beings.

When you recall a time in your past when you fell in love, where you then able to stay cool, in control of yourself and the relationship? Or where you calling that person everyday, always wanting to see them, thinking about them and eager to experience a growing connection with them?

Heres the point: We do not fall in love by “tripping” over or falling into a “hole!” Love is a process we do to ourselves! And there are always new ways to discover how love can manifest between us - to the point where you act upon it right now!

    All the best,

    Hi Frank,

Useful stuff. Thanks! But I have a question: how can I know that my copy will do very well?! I know you can say the copy should be about the end result, stuffed with psychological triggers and powerful words…etc. But, how can I know 100% that my copy will generate me fortune? Because, even after learning many good writing principles, such as: here’s who I am, here’s what I get for you, here’s what it will do for you, here’s what you should do next.. I feel hesitated if my copy will work very well!
